SSHS PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The Personal Development, Health & Physical Education (PDHPE) program is important to foster knowledge, skills and values that promote good health and encourage positive participation in recreation, sport and leisure activities. It promotes lifelong participation in physical activity through the development of attitudes, skills and movement competence. The program helps students learn about factors that promote and protect the physical, social and emotional health of individuals, and they learn to identify harms associated with particular situations and behaviours, and how to make positive lifestyle choices. Aims:
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education aims to develop in students: · an understanding of their own body · an understanding that health has physical, social and emotional dimensions · perceptions of being healthy · an understanding of the factors that impact directly and indirectly on the health and safety of individuals, families, groups and communities · an awareness of factors that maintain a healthy lifestyle · knowledge and skills to plan, implement and evaluate actions to promote health and safety · an understanding of the physical, social and emotional development across the human lifespan to promote their health and wellbeing · an understanding of how food provides nutrients for energy and growth, how it plays a significant social role in people’s lives, and how to select food to promote health and growth · positive interaction and communication with others · health decision-making skills · movement skills in all environments    Implementation: · Schools and their communities share responsibility for promoting the benefits of healthy living and wellbeing to students. · All students at our school will study a sequential Personal Development, Health and Physical Education course based upon the Main Idea Strands, Objectives and Outcomes, and Content contained within the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Syllabus documents. · Courses offered by the PDHPE faculty include the mandatory Years 7-10 PDHPE syllabus, Sports Studies in years 9 & 10, and in the senior years 2U PDHPE, and Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation (SLR). · PDHPE staff and classroom teachers are required to work together, and with the community and external agencies to develop and implement a joint Personal Development, Health & Physical Education program for all students. · School sport will also remain under the PDHPE faculty’s responsibility, and it will be coordinated by the Sports Coordinator, who is under the Head Teacher PDHPE responsibility. · The PDHPE Head Teacher will be responsible for coordinating the school’s athletic, swimming, inter-school and intra-school sports programs. This responsibility is delegated to the Sports Coordinator. · Students will be offered a wide variety of non-competitive, competitive, individual and team sports. · Learning opportunities must be provided that cater for the identified needs of each student. · Student progress in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education based upon Objectives and Outcomes will be reported to students and parents in both half and end of year academic reports.
