Each year the following School carnivals are held - Swimming Carnival in Term 1 at Des Renford Aquatic Centre. All students should attend.
- Athletics Carnival in Term 2 at the Hensley Athletic Field. All students compete including Years 11 and 12.
- Zone Carnivals. Students who gain a place in the School Carnivals may be invited to compete against students from other schools at the Zone Carnival. These are held at a venue away from South Sydney High School.
- Area Carnival and State Competition. These are the two highest levels of sporting competition for students of NSW Department of Education and Training schools. These involve students from other schools and are held at venues away from South Sydney High School.
