In Years 7-10 all students must undertake the mandatory PDHPE course, which is divided into four strands: - Strand 1: Self and relationships
- Strand 2: Movement Skill and Performance
- Strand 3: Individual and Community Health
- Strand 4: Lifelong Physical Activity
Participation in physical activity is an essential component of the PDHPE syllabus. Students participate in a wide variety of physical activities designed to enhance physical skill, fitness, personal awareness and interpersonal skills. Theory lessons cover a wide range of topics relevant to young people including drug education, sexuality and relationships, self protection and safety, and lifestyle diseases. In Years 9 and 10 students have the opportunity to choose the elective subject “Sport Studies”. This elective provides opportunities to participate in a wide range of interesting and exciting activities including surfing, ten pin bowling, squash, tennis, swimming and lifesaving, lacrosse, outdoor recreation, circuit training and others. Theory topics include Sports Coaching, Sport In Australia, Drugs In Sport, The Human Body, Sports Injuries and the Olympic Games. In Years 11 and 12 students are able to choose three subjects from the PDHPE learning area; PDHPE, Community and Family Studies, and Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation. In PDHPE students learn about how the body moves, factors that affect physical performance, and major issues in Australia’s health. Optional topics include Outdoor Recreation, First Aid and Sports Medicine. Community and Family Studies aims to develop in students an understanding of the diverse nature of families and communities in Australian society. In Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation students learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and are provided with opportunities to be physically active as well as become informed and responsible decision makers. Topics include a selection from: aquatics, athletics, dance, fitness, gymnastics, team and individual games and sports, resistance training, sports administration, and sports coaching and training.
